The Greenbrier Resort Mini-Vacation
Part Four

"Dashing through the snow in a one horse open sleigh." Correction - two horse open sleigh! Judy and I scheduled an afternoon sleigh ride. We picked up our equestrian transport at Kate's Mountain Outfitters shop located on the lower level of the resort. The folks tucked warm blankets around us and we were ready to trot.

You will notice what technology has done to the ole tradional sleigh! Guess the wheels are necessary to travel across the snowless asphalt.

The story of The Greenbrier begins at the spring of sulphur water at the center of the resort property. It issues forth below the green dome of the white-columned Springhouse that has been the symbol of The Greenbrier for generations. Since 1778, people have come to “take the waters” to restore their health. In its first 125 years, the resort was known by the name White Sulphur Springs. The sulphur waters have now been plumbed into the spa. No longer can one just taste the waters at the spring house as we had done in the past. Below is the Springhouse.

We traveled the snow covered paths around the golf course. Judy wanted to go flying over the hills of the golf course proper with snow spray rising above our sled! She imagines Dr. Zhivago and Lara sipping from a flask of cognac with ermine robes protecting them from the chill. (She may not have the company of Omar Sharif - but she has me!) I really do not think the golf course folks would appreciate having tracks in the fairways and pristine greens. Speaking of golf, three championship courses have long made the game of golf a storied tradition at The Greenbrier. The Old White has been newly restored to its original 1914 grandeur, and the famed Greenbrier Course is the only resort golf course in the world to have hosted both the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup matches.

The PGA tour and The Greenbrier jointly announced that they have entered a six-year agreement, through 2015, whereby the historic West Virginia resort will sponsor and host The Greenbrier Classic as part of the FedExCup, beginning the week of July 26 - August 1, 2010.

These cottages facing the golf course are actually private residences.

We returned to hot cups of cider and chocolate with marshmallows.

Tomorrow - a wet experience.
