More Country Store Treasures

There are so many items of interest in the Country Store. One of the last diret operator switchboards in the county is on display. The switchboard above was taken from Alice, WV (Gilmer County). Our good friend Ruby Bush remembers operating this device. This was a time in our history when the operator was a personal friend. None of that "Press one for billing", "Press two for repairs"..... you get the idea.

Butter was made in churns such as the one below. Those homemade dairy products were yummy. There is nothing better than homemade cottage cheese made in a stone crock.

In the Folk Festival Store and Museum there are many examples of pioneering crafts such as weaving on this loom. Weaving demonstrations are held each year during the Folk Festival.

Spinning is also another craft that is demonstrated. We have several excellent spinners and weavers living in the county.

Speaking of objects that "if they could talk" - this child's coffin is tucked away in the loft of the store/museum.

The folk festival is always looking for objects that reflect our history and culture. The majority of the artifacts are donated such as this magnificent hickory chair below. We would certainly welcome your donation.

There are so many things for the eye to behold from the old cider press to the antique X-ray machine. Tomorrow I will end our brief tour of the Country Store by looking at eye level on the many shelves around the perimeter of the store.
