Jason's Trail Cam

In our last post I mentioned friend Jason's trail cam which is located on his farm in Gilmer County. With his permission, I will share a few critters that he has captured on this neat piece of technology.


Large critters like the deer above can be expected to appear in front of the cam. Even smaller and smellier beasts may appear.

Mammals seem to be the most plentiful showing up in front of the camera, but birds are also captured like the hawks and turkeys below.






Here is a quote from Jason as he commented on the photo of the bear and cubs appearing below. "This is one of my all time favorites. It was really neat sitting in a tree stand 30 feet up and having these two little guys playing underneath me while momma ate."

Coyotes are very common in our county and throughout West Virginia.

Even an elusive bobcat is captured by Jason's camera.

Another Hoax!

You guys who are Facebook Friends already know this story. As I was searching Google for trail cams, I was directed to today's edition of The Gilmer Free Press. Hark, here was a picture of a cougar (Mountain Lion seen above) and the post stated that Kenny Varner of Webster County, WV, captured the cougar on his trail cam. This hoax has been making the internet rounds for years.

The specific photo has been attributed to at least 10 other states. Experts say that it was most likely taken in Texas. Two of my Face Book friends (Both having the same name!) quickly identified the source of this photo. Thanks gals- you passed my test! Prizes are coming soon to a mailbox near you!

I will tell you that friend Jason Miller of Grass Run captures amazing photographs on his trail cam. He posts many photos of Gilmer County bear, huge white tailed deer, coyotes, turkey, and a plethora of other critters passing through his neck of the woods. I really enjoy and appreciate his posts. By the way, Jason is a very fine fisherman.

I did setup a trail cam in the woods in back of our house. Here is the first species captured using the cam technology. I am a little scared due to the size of this critter. Will ask Jason what he thinks. Maybe I should stop using a whole bison as bait!

Holy Carotids!

The article below reminds me of Audry's Restaurant in Glenville (Formerly The Common Place). Audry and Herbie have a burger that if you can eat it in an hour then you do not have to pay for it. Here is a story along the same line from Los Vegas.

Laughing tourists were either cynical or confused about whether a man was really suffering a medical episode amid the "doctor," "nurses" and health warnings at the Heart Attack Grill in Los Vegas, a restaurant owner said Wednesday.

"It was no joke," said Jon Basso, who promotes himself "Doctor Jon," his scantily-clad waitresses as nurses and customers as patients.

Basso said he could tell right away the man in his 40s eating a Triple Bypass burger was having trouble. He was sweating, shaking and could barely talk.

Paramedics were called Saturday night, fire spokesman Tim Szymanski said, and the man was hospitalized. His name and information about his condition weren't made public.

Giggles can be heard on the soundtrack of amateur video showing the man on a stretcher being wheeled out of the restaurant where patrons pass an antique ambulance at the door and a sign: "Caution! This establishment is bad for your health."

Eaters are given surgical gowns as they choose from a calorically extravagant menu offering "Bypass" burgers, "Flatliner" fries, buttermilk shakes and free meals to folks over 350 pounds.

Basso said he hopes the man is OK, and added that he felt bad for him because tourists treated his misfortune like a joke.

"We would never pull a stunt like that," he said.
