The Passing Of

Another Icon

Happy 4th of July! Hope you all have a great holiday.

Update - ABVD chemo treatment#4 went well. No side effects.

Gosh, another icon has been transferred to heaven on the first day of July - nope, I do not mean Michael Jackson or Farrah Fawcett. Tis Mrs. Slocombe! Mrs. Slocombe is a great English character played by actress Mollie Sugden. She has brought many laughs into our lives.

Mary Isobel 'Mollie' Sugden (21 July 1922 – 1 July 2009) was an English comedy actress best known for portraying a saleswoman in the popular British sitcom "Are You Being Served?" from 1972 to 1985. Sugden's big break that gave her international fame was the role of Mrs Slocombe—a department-store saleswoman with a socially superior attitude, a repertoire of double entendres, and a penchant for bouffant, pastel-colored coiffures. She later reprised this role in "Grace & Favour," which ran from 1992 to 1993. Sugden also appeared in "The Liver Birds"" and "Coronation Street."

You will notice from the above tribute that one of the routines in her vast repertoire of double entendres is about how she just couldn't wait to get home and play with her pussy. Yes, my friends, it is not what you think. Check out it on the Merriam-Webster Dictionary site. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/pussy

For you folks who think the term is more of a crude noun and are too busy or embarrassed to check out the dictionary site above, here it be!

Our English friends assure us that the Mike Myers film, Austin Powers:The Spy Who Shagged Me, brings another meaning that we in the U.S. do not relate to at once. The term shagged has an other common usage in England. This meaning is in the dictionary. Look up definition number 5 on this site. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Shagged Now, does this mean that I should rethink getting shag carpet for our house?

I am through with my English lessons! Mrs. Slocombe, you will be missed. Thank heavens for reruns.
