Mini-vacation #2

(After Start of ABVD)

Episode 3

On Saturday afternoon we attended the Little Levels Heritage Fair in Hillsboro. Little Levels refers to the flat valley terrain around Hillsboro.

The three-day event welcomes writers with a two-day International Writers Workshop at Cliffside, the old home of Dr. Wallace, who delivered Pearl S. Buck, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author, into this world in 1892. Buck was born in Hillsboro as Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker on June 26, 1892, the daughter of Absalom and Caroline Sydenstricker. Pearl Buck's home is located just before you enter Hillsboro from the north and is open for tours.

Two staples of this regional festival are music and food - both in plenty of supply this year. There were arts and crafts and quilts at the McNeel gym and Pocahontas Free Library area.

Dan was intrigued with the display of wooden bowls. They were nicely carved and were selling at very reasonable prices. Dan purchased two bowls - one being made of spalted wood. Spalting is any form of wood coloration caused by fungi. Although primarily found in dead trees, it can also occur under stressed tree conditions or even in living trees. There are four distinct types of spalting. However, only three of them are actually considered pleasing for use in bowl production.

At 2:00 we watched the Heritage Parade. Ms. Norma Mikesell was the Heritafe Parade Marshall.

There were several floats addressing the theme of this year's Festival - "Tradition. The thread running back as far as we can remember. Stiching together the years of our lives."

There were also a couple of tractors in the parade along with...

the two horses that concluded the Heritage Parade.

It was a good afternoon. Upon returning to the cabin, the girls decided it was time to rest.

Tomorrow is the conclusion of Adventure #2 after ABVD.
